DMS Volunteers

DMS VOLUNTEERS

At the heart of every charitable organization is the Volunteer, man and woman who who give their time and resources without expecting any financial reward to help vulnerable people exposed to recurring natural and other disasters and who are unable to develop disaster mitigation and emergency preparedness programs on their own.

DMS volunteers play a key role in DMS’ activities worldwide. Volunteers either working from within the confines of our home office in Canada, or in far away remote corners of the world, make a noble contribution to the thousands of disenfranchised people living in high-risk and vulnerable communities worldwide.

DMS Volunteers come from all walks of life, but all share a common thread; “Service to Humanity” Volunteers make a difference to people in Canada and abroad, in most cases Volunteers go unnoticed working behind the scenes supporting and training people. Volunteering is not a job, but a calling and an opportunity to learn new skills, meet people, understand them and their cultures.

DMS has several Volunteer openings in Canada:

  • Pursuing and following-up DMS donors;
  • Managing and mailing letters to potential donors;
  • Pursuing web-enabled donor programs;
  • Organizing brownbag matching fund presentations;
  • Social events;
  • Researching potential projects both in Canada and abroad, determining  needs and solutions;

And for those wanting to serve abroad, opportunities include, but are not limited to:

  • Doctors, nurses and medical support personnel;
  • Managers and office administrative personnel including IT and telecommunications specialists;
  • Teachers, trainers and demonstrators;
  • Academics, sociologists, linguists and  interpreters;
  • Search and rescue officers, first responders, firefighters, and  law enforcement officers;
  • Horticulturists, engineers, water specialists, mechanics and drivers;
  • Builders, carpenters, electricians and others,

Volunteers help DMS pursue potential donors, organizing brownbag donor presentations, social events designed to garner support from potential donors to managing our mailing and web-enabled campaigns.

Professional linguists, sociologists, doctors and nurses, engineers and other professional trainers help DMS prepare other Volunteers to serve at the DMS Centres, abroad including possible service training local people in these Centres as well.

Abroad,Volunteers help DMS implement  local community-based training programs designed to mitigate losses caused by natural and other disasters by empowering people within each community to participate and play an active role in their communities through well though localized disaster mitigation and prevention programs to health and family hygiene, and education in the prevention and spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria and other communicable diseases including immunization programs.

Other services include, the establishment and development of programs in such areas as water and land  management, to provide safe clean drinking water to their respective communities and irrigation systems designed to increase crop yields and income for the community. These programs are designed to bring about positive economic change within a community  for long-term sustainability and capable of maintaining DMS programs going forward.

Volunteering is much more than just a job. It’s team work, between the Volunteer, the community and local authorities,  to  create opportunities for members of a recipient community, making them  productive, learn about new cultures and local skills, as Volunteers we we serve, we teach, mentor and guide people to becoming productive and proud citizens to ensure that programs work, are fully understood and members of the community gain an appreciation for their stake and ownership in any given project. THis is an excellent opportunity to foster new relationships with the local community members work with them and create lifelong friendships.
